You Are Different
ANGEL DIDNâT GET BACK to the apartment until late that afternoon.
Really, it was early evening.
The sun had set. There was still light in the sky, but it was red and orange, with even the yellows and lighter blues fading, leaving indigo and purple along the line making up the horizon, reflecting in the windows along the street leading up to her flat at the top of the hill.
Sheâd just come from a talk with Mika and Yarli.
The two seers took mercy on her.
Really, they took mercy on Nick⦠and, possibly more so, on Dalejem.
Angel couldnât help feeling guilty at how obviously relieved both of them were to hear that Dalejem was aliveâânot dead or enslaved via Nickâs bite or venom, like theyâd all quietly assumed when he went missing the same time as Nick.
Still, they hadnât been thrilled.
They hadnât been thrilled about any part of this situation.
They clearly werenât thrilled at Angelâs request to keep Nickâs being here quiet.
At the same time, they obviously understood the logic of not telling Dex, or Kiko⦠or really, any of the humans on Blackâs team who were friends with one or both of them. Dex would definitely want to kill Nick. Kiko would probably have a full-blown PTSD reaction to the news that Nick was alive, much less that he was back in the city.
Yarli and Mika also seemed to agree it should be Miri who told Black, since it was Miriâs decision to bring Nick back to San Francisco.
More than anything, the two seers seemed to respond to the fact that Miri voiced the whole thing as an order. Angel told them Miri had given her and Cowboy an order not to harm Nick. Sheâd ordered them not tell anyone Nick was alive and in San Francisco, not until Miri had a chance to talk to her husband.
Mika and Yarli both looked at one other, once Angel pulled out the âorderâ word.
Angel saw it in their faces, before either said a thing.
They werenât going to disobey a direct order from Miri.
They saw Miri as their boss, just like Black.
Which, fair enoughââBlack was explicit that he and the doc were co-owners of Black Securities and Investigations now. Heâd changed all the paperwork to reflect that; it even showed up on the company website, under the masthead.
He changed it not long after they were officially married, according to Miri.
Funnily enough, Angel still wasnât sure exactly when that had been. Sheâd first been made aware of it when Black got shot at Stow Lake, but as far as she knew, theyâd never had any kind of ceremony, not even at a Justice of the Peace.
They must have, though⦠right?
At some point, they must have made things official.
Pushing that from her mind with a frown, she unlocked the front door of her apartment, pushing that same door inward once sheâd undone the bolt.
Holding three stuffed-full grocery bags of Nickâs clothes, along with an equally-stuffed backpack of other things sheâd found in his old room
